Last Sunday during Operating Afternoon, we learned about APRS (Automatic Packet Reporting System). Jim Dean, W8UD, explained the history of APRS and dove into the details of APRS packet formation and decoding. Jim provided several examples and operated his Raspberry Pi running Direwolf (a software TNC) connected to his Yaesu mobile radio. Randy Allen, KA0AZS, set up at his home station and exchanged APRS messages with Jim and demonstrated his APRSISCE\/32 software and all of its capabilities. After the presentation, Jim helped people set up their APRS-capable HT radios for APRS and a common home set up using a software TNC and SignaLink USB sound card was demonstrated. Very educational and informative!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
