Finding Your Way Around

A few things about the site's navigation that are worth knowing:

  • The top menu has dropdowns. Hover over (or tap, on mobile) "Home," "Events & Programs," or "Resources" to see a list of sub-pages open underneath.
  • "Events & Programs" has a wider menu with two columns — "On the Air" activities (Repeaters, POTA, Digital Radio, Contesting, etc.) on one side, "Club Programs" (Field Day, Tech Night, Presentations, etc.) on the other.
  • Most content pages have their own left-hand sidebar with related pages grouped together. If you're looking for something related to the page you're on, check the sidebar first.
  • Breadcrumbs (the small "Home › Section › Page" trail at the top of most pages) show you where you are and let you jump back up a level.
  • On mobile, the top menu collapses into a hamburger icon (☰) in the upper right — tap it to open the full navigation.

Downloading Documents

Club Presentations

The Presentations & Documents page (under Events & Programs → Club Programs) has a searchable library of past club presentations, organized into categories like Field Day, Antennas, Digital Modes, and more.

  • Use the search box at the top to find something by title or presenter name.
  • Click any category heading to expand or collapse that group.
  • Each document has a PDF button — click it to open the file in a new tab.
Newsletter (Full Quieting)

The Newsletter page always shows the current issue front and center, plus the 5 most recent issues below it. Each issue has two options:

  • Read Online — opens the PDF in a new browser tab
  • Download — saves the PDF directly to your device

There's also a highlighted Article Index link in the sidebar — a spreadsheet listing every article that's ever run in Full Quieting.

Club Documents

Bylaws, officer info, and other official club documents live under Home → About BARC in the top menu, with their own sidebar to move between them.

Submitting a Presentation

Have an idea for a Tech Night topic or a monthly meeting presentation? On the Presentations & Documents page, look for "Submit a Topic" in the sidebar. Clicking it opens a short form right on the page — fill in your name, callsign, presentation title, and a bit about what you'd like to cover, and it goes straight to the Programs Coordinator.

Logging In & Passwords

🔧 Coming soon. A full member login area — with password management, an online member directory, and profile settings — is planned as the next phase of the website project. It isn't live yet. We'll announce it once it's ready.

For Officers: Creating a Post

If you've been given an account with posting access, here's how to publish something to the site:

  1. Go to bellbrookarc.org/wp/wp-admin and log in with your username and password.
  2. In the left-hand menu, click Posts → Add New.
  3. Give your post a title, then write your content in the main box below it.
  4. To add a photo, click the + button in the content area and choose Image.
  5. On the right-hand side, assign a Category and set a Featured Image.
  6. Click Publish when ready — or Preview first to check how it looks.
  7. To edit later, go to Posts → All Posts and click Edit.

An umbrella covering a wide range of modes — each solving a different problem

Digital amateur radio refers to any mode where information — voice, text, images, or data — is converted into a digital signal before being sent over the air, rather than transmitted as analog audio. Instead of your voice directly modulating a carrier wave, a computer or the radio's internal processor encodes it into a stream of data, which is then transmitted and decoded back into voice, text, or an image at the other end.

This isn't one technology — it's an umbrella covering a wide range of modes that have grown up over the last few decades, each solving a different problem: better voice quality, working weak signals below the noise floor, sending text or images, or linking repeaters together over the internet so a handheld in Ohio can talk to someone across the world.

Why this matters for new and younger hams Digital modes like FT8, APRS, and Winlink are specifically identified as low-barrier entry points that appeal to technically inclined people — SDR, digital modes, and mesh networking map directly to data science, cybersecurity, and networking skills people are already interested in. A Technician license already has full access to digital voice modes and APRS on VHF/UHF — no upgrade needed to get started.

Winlink — Email Over Radio

Winlink allows hams to send and receive email via radio with no internet required at the client end. Messages route through a global network of relay stations (RMS gateways) and can be delivered to any standard email address when the gateway has internet. Critical for EmComm — BARC and GCARES use Winlink for formal ICS forms, health & welfare messages, and situational reports when conventional communications are unavailable.

DMR · D-STAR · System Fusion (C4FM) — crystal-clear voice with internet linking capability

Digital voice modes encode audio as data — providing clearer audio, caller ID display, and internet linking into worldwide networks not available on analog FM. The three main systems don't interoperate with each other, so the practical choice usually comes down to what's active locally.

Which mode should I choose? DMR wins on cost and network size (BrandMeister is the largest digital voice network in the world). D-STAR wins on amateur-specific routing features (callsign-based). System Fusion wins on ease of setup and audio quality — and it's what the BARC 443.675 repeater uses, so if you're a BARC member starting out, a Yaesu radio and System Fusion is the path of least resistance.

APRS broadcasts GPS position, status messages, and short text over VHF, widely used for tracking mobile stations, weather stations, and event/net logistics. BARC uses APRS at public service events to track volunteer positions along parade routes and race courses, and for Field Day coordination.

Hotspots & Pi-Star

Personal digital voice access via Raspberry Pi — no local repeater needed

A hotspot is a small personal device — usually a Raspberry Pi with an MMDVM radio board — that bridges a handheld radio to digital voice networks over the internet at very low power (typically 10–100mW). This gives access to DMR, D-STAR, System Fusion, and M17 networks regardless of local repeater coverage, and is a big reason digital voice has spread far beyond areas with established repeater infrastructure.

Pi-Star is the standard software image for running a DMR/D-STAR/Fusion hotspot on a Raspberry Pi with an MMDVM board (e.g., a Zumspot or Jumbospot). It handles the network-side connection to BrandMeister, D-STAR reflectors, or Wires-X rooms. Entry cost for a complete hotspot setup is typically $60–$120.

Try EchoLink from your phone — free, no hardware needed

Download the free EchoLink app (iOS or Android), register your callsign, and connect to the W8DGN 147.045 node. Check in to the Sunday night net from anywhere with cell signal. This costs nothing and requires no extra hardware.

Try System Fusion — if you have a Yaesu radio

Put 443.675 MHz (+, 118.8 Hz tone) in your Yaesu radio and key up in digital mode. The repeater auto-switches — you're on System Fusion and connected to Wires-X. You can reach the AmericaLink room (Node 21080) and talk to hams worldwide. No programming or configuration beyond the frequency entry.

Get on FT8 — if you have an HF license and a transceiver

Download WSJT-X (free), sync your computer clock to UTC, connect your radio via USB audio or a SignaLink, and set the dial to 14.074 MHz USB. FT8 contacts are automated exchanges — you don't even need to key a mic. Within minutes you'll be working stations worldwide. Tech Night regularly covers FT8 setup — ask AC8ZU for help.

Build an SDR receiver — cheapest way to explore the spectrum

Buy an RTL-SDR v4 dongle (~$25), download SDR# or SDR++, plug it in, and you can see and decode signals across the entire radio spectrum in real time. Decode APRS, weather satellites, aircraft ADS-B, paging systems, and more — no license required to receive.
