The Bellbrook Amateur Radio Club supports students studying for the entry-level Technician License Exam. There is no charge for the support and you do not have to be a BARC member. Note that Morse Code is no longer required to obtain any amateur radio license. No experience is required and there is no minimum age required to earn a Technician class license.
An Amateur Radio License Exam session will be held and published each spring and fall.
If you have any questions about reaching a BARC Mentor for help while studying, send an email to Paul Sharp at psharp1@woh.rr.com.
Here are the steps to getting your license:
- Amateur radio is authorized by the FCC and you must register with the FCC and obtain an FCC Registration Number (FRN) before getting a license. To visit the FCC website and login or register, click the link below and follow the steps to obtain your FRN and register.
- FCC Registration
- You MUST bring your FRN with you to the exam session as well as a photo ID or you will not be permitted to take the exam.

- A textbook may be purchased from the Amateur Radio Relay League (ARRL) at https://www.arrl.org/shop/Licensing-and-Education/ or from Amazon.com.
- One of the best study aids is a set of YouTube videos provided by ARRL and led by Dave Casler, KE0OG.
- There are also several on-line Practice Exams. All Technician License Exam questions are known in advance. Your exam session will include a subset of those questions. By taking the practice exams every day, you can monitor your progress in learning the material. When you consistently score above 85%, you will have no problem passing the exam.
- ARRL Practice Exam (you will need to register for an account)
- QRZ Practice Exam (you will need to register for an account)
- Here are a few other websites with helpful study guides.
- Here are some helpful files with radio bands, abbreviations, and math hints you can download.
- Finally, if you have any questions, just submit them via the Contact page and a BARC Mentor will be in touch to help out!
See the Greene County ARES website gcares.net for information about the General and Amateur Extra license classes. There are license exams for all levels every year at Hamvention in May and from time-to-time by DARA.
